Demystifying Granularity with Talkback

From The Old WolfDream

Notes:

  • What is the accessibility focus and what is an object?
    • Focus is moved by exploring to an object or by swiping from one to the other.
    • An object can range from a simple label or control to an edit field full of text.
    • Whatever you can review is what text is within the object in focus.
  • Changing granularity.
    • Starting in version 3.4 of TalkBack, granularity is changed from withing the Local Context Menu.(The old behaviour can be restored from the Manage Gestures submenu in TalkBack Settings.)
      • Open the Menu. (Swipe up-and-right)
      • Explore to desired granularity and lift finger to activate.
    • Swipe right and left to review.
    • Moving forward moves the reading pointer or cursor to the end of the spoken element, while moving backwards moves to the begining; the last element is therefore repeated when reversing direction.
    • The object is the boundary; one must return to default granularity or explore to a different object in order to move focus.
  • Remarks:
    • This method applies equally to editing.
    • There is a bug with the character reading level whereby the first character of an object cannot be reviewed.
    • Changing focus resets to default granularity.
    • However, the position within an object is remembered until an app is closed.
