Accessibility of the emusic app
Emusic is a service that delivers mp3 format music albums and audiobooks. Comparisons to colombia house are inevitable. "we wil give you a bunch of stuff cheap, slash our distrobution expenses down to a nub, and then dictate what, when, and how you buy so that we make up our costs when you don't follow the rules". It's high maintanance, but if you read the fine print and stay on top of things, it's a decent way to acquire. Emusic is atrocious in so many ways. I will stick to the software for now and not delve into them all.
Emusic companion software was, is, and ever more shall be an abominable pain in the neck. The only moderately comfortable way to use the service as a blind person is on an android phone with the emusic app, which is why I've re-instated my subscription. Note that for some irritating reason, the app isn't available in Canada. It was absorbed onto my phone by osmosis or something.
The app has a number of odd querks and just plain service delivery gaps. Some of these include:
complete lack of audiobook support,
Complete lack of any account management options,
Absolutely no access to view past purchases,
No streaming options for accessing your emusic library,
Buggy wish list syncing,
No way to review items or see other users reviews,
and poor handling of broken downloads.
Still not discouraged? Let's move on to accessibility. Most of the controls are visible, but almost nothing is labeled. One nice thing is that if you take some action which could potentially cost you money, the program will let you know. As such, I felt very comfortable tapping on graphical items to find out what they do and I was able to label them myself. Only android 4.3 and up has this feature though so most of us are left out. If ever the ability to share labels is intergrated into talkback, I will post my labels file here.
Most of the items on the screen are in the swipe order, but not in the order in which they appear on the screen. For example, when swiping through the screen to get to search result listings, you have to swipe past all of the player controls first, even though the results are in the middle of the screen and the player controls are at the bottom. This is more of a usibility issue than anything and I've gotten used to it but it took a while.
The saved music feature is very strange. I have hundreds of items in my saved list, but only 16 oor so show up on my app. That's just annoying, but the interesting thing from an accessibility stand-point is that there is no accessible means of removing purchased items from the saved list on the app. On the sight, there is currently no accessible way of adding items to the saved list. Years ago when I first started using the service I could add items to saved without any issue. Now though, the button has disappeared off of the website and the only way I am able to save things is via the app. Where-as the only way I am able to remove items is via the website.
An update fixed an issue I was having with 4.4 where I couldn't access the list of similar artists. If you are having that issue, please update.
over the past seven years, Emusic has never been the slightest bit responsive to any of my requests for accessibility improvements, from windows, to mac, and now android. It is possible to get ahold of very friendly and engaging people who listen and understand the issues, but once they say, "I'll send your concerns to head office and see what I can do", I know all hope is lost. I'm a pretty good access technologist. I've offered to do limited consulting work for them for free to improve this app and the download manager for mac and nothing has ever come of that.
The Emusic app is a fantastic way for users like myself, who will put up with almost any amount of frustration for music, to not only collect commercial mp3's cheep, but also find out of print releases and discover new music. It is not for the faint of heart.
discovery about the save option
Hi, Just as an update to my earlier review of this app. I discovered this week that the save button for adding albums to your wishlist is a toggle. IE, if the album you are looking at is not in your saved list, double tapping save will add it. If the item is already in your list, doubletapping will remove it. Hopefully you remember all of the hundreds of albums you have saved, because the button says save no matter what the status of the album you are viewing.
