Mobile print works well
When I needed a printer, I needed a printer. I bought a samsung CLP360 because I needed a colour laser printer in order to print documents for my business. It happened to be on sale for 150 bucks or something and I walked in to the computer store, bought the thing, and carried it home half-way across the metropolis on my shoulder. I did no research what-so-ever and mobile was never a consideration in my decision to purchase.
Nowadays, I don’t have my business and I do less and less on my laptop and more and more on my mobile devices. I downloaded the samsung print service and samsung mobile print applications for android and I am very happy with their accessibility. I don’t own a samsung mobile device. I’m using a moto G, but that did not diminish the experience for me in any way.
I can’t test the scan, copy and fax features because my hardware only prints. I have to say though, the print functions are super accessible.
When adding a printer, there are two unlabeled graphics which should be addressed by the developer. The first one is a refresh button to search for printers. The second is a popup menu where you can add devices manually. My CLP360 will only connect using wifi direct which is OK, but if using wifi direct, you have to connect to the printer manually in wireless network settings first. The add printer manager in mobile print does not allow for input of any sort of password. Since there’s WPA2 set up on the printer, it needs to be connected manually.
Note: on the printer side, numerous third party apps have had trouble scanning my network and detecting my clp360. I have wondered if this is because wifi direct is interfering with the scanning process for the main home network, despite the fact that my laptop connects over the home network just fine. I haven’t had time to test this, but I mention it as if you would like to use this printer with a third party network printing app that you are already used to, it very possibly will not work.
Mobile print can draw files from many sources, including phone storage, camera, social networks, and file sharing services. Most of the buttons are labeled to indicate which source or service they are connected to; However, the dropbox, evernote, skydrive, and some service I’ve never heard of called “box”, did not have labels. While I was in the process of creating these, I happened to notice that the webviews required to sign in to the various services are very readable and more or less stable. Of course, if you already have these accounts linked to your device, as I discovered with my dropbox account, that simplifies the process even more.
So, considering the limitted use I actually have for such a powerful app, I’m extraordinarily happy with it and very pleasantly surprised. As a sie note, The IPhone app is completely unusible. I was disappointed considering samsungs accessibility trackrecord and that I use both platforms pretty regularly.
For android users though, I feel very confident recommending a samsung printing device for anyone wanting to get hard copy in and out of their mobile device.
