WD My Cloud very nice app
I did a lot of research on this before encouraging my girlfriend to spring for one for her home network. We got the 4 tb model which will keep her for quite a while, though it's not a patch on my storage needs. I wish they had a 32 tb version Though there was lots to recommend the product from an average user standpoint, we found very little in the way of accessibility information. So, here you go.
Note: you only need the desktop software if you plan to access your cloud from an external network on a laptop. I highly recommend avoiding the desctop software.
Note: this drive can be set up completely from it's web interface which is clean and fully accessible, and can be accessed from a pc on the local network at smb://wdmycloud. Further discussion of setup procedure is beyond the scope of this review.
Setting up the app is simple, accessible, and tedious. There ar a few screens to go through, all of which are accessible and intuitive. First is the licence screen which contains a talkback friendly web area for the terms and conditions and an accept button conveniently located on the bottom right corner outside of the web content area. Then there is a tutorial screen. Here, I accidentally pressed a help button and then could not by any means free myself of the help pages. I had to restart my phone. When I re-opened the mycloud app, it came straigh back to the screen for choosing cloud accounts to connect. As I did the setup from my local network, the app found the shares and let me log right in.
This app, like many others, allows you to access your other cloud services such as google drive and dropbox. I think I would rather they put more effort into features on their own cloud services for a couple of reasons:
It's what I'm paying them for one thing.
For another, most of these other cloud services are good for much more than dumping files off of your device, I typically use the features, especially on dropbox.
Accessing files on My Cloud is very clean, but not a treat. While every item on the screen is accessible with talkback, there are several labelling issues:
first, to the left of each item is an unlabeled graphic. Tapping this graphic selects the item so that you can rename, share, choose an application to open and in other ways to interact. Doubletap and hold on the item itself does the same thing. So, I'm in favour of iliminating the icons altogether.
At the top of the screen are several icons, all labeled WD My Cloud. On the far left is a system menu where you can add a device, access the settings and so on. To the right of that is a history icon that is labeled with the name of the parent folder you are in. Tapping the parent folder brings up a menu showing the current path and allowing you to navigate directly. This is a very nice feature once it's clear what the icon does. To the right of history you have a folder menu with options such as new folder, upload, and access camera. On the far right you have an actions menu. If an item is selected, this menu will allow you to rename, share, choose a program to open with and more. Again, these are all labeled WD My Cloud, so without some serious experimentation, there is no way to find out what each icon does and where the features of the program reside. Browsing around these menus, I noticed that I could read the icons using explore by touch; However, when swiping left or right, I often hear WD Mycloud instead of the next or previous option as expected.
There are no visual customizations, alerts, badges, and all in all, the settings peign is pretty limited. Still, I'm somewhat satisfied with the way this app works, especially considering that the desktop software is impossible. Western digital has a great foundation here for building an accessible and feature rich cloud solution.
