fast response from developer
I submitted a ticket this evening and received a responce immediately from Greg letting me know that a new version is on the way that should have fixes for some of the issues I have with the app. I will hold off a full review until then. Meanwhile it would not hurt to visit help.untappd.com and let them know you are interested in using an accessible version of this app.
It's a very cool idea.
One way or another, this app will drive you to trink.
Accessibility of the untappd app has been a concern for over a year. On first using the app, I emailed some accessibility issues to Greg, one of the developers. At first, it seemed that improvements would be close enough at hand that I decided to hold off on a review. Some good things have happened in the world of untappd since then. One major pitfall where-in the original tab bar icons were inaccessible has been taken care of to some extent. I would like to see the current tabs replaced with standard android pages and tabs with the ability to swipe back and forth, but at least all areas of the app are now reachable by the tabs. Other accessibility issues still need much work.
There are two show stopper bugs for me. Ratings, which were supposed to be one of the first areas overhauled, are completely inaccessible with talkback.
Photo features are completely invisible to talkback. I missed this very much when I took untappt to a beer festival. I can’t see photos, but my followers can and the ability of blind people to take reasonably good photos is built into the OS. I would like to have the ability to leverage that within untappt.
Locations are very hit and miss. If the location I want is in the suggestions untappt scoops up from google maps and location services, I can select them just fine with talkback; However, I can not see more than untappt’s suggestions. The controls to let me search for a missing location or create tags for common places such as home don’t work with or are invisible to talkback. There are two unlabeled buttons in the locations panel. I can not figure out what they do because nothing apparently happens when I press them.
Many other buttons and controls are not labeled, including the icons on the tab bar. None of the unlabeled matter is the type of graphic that talkback recognizes for labeling.
I’m able to check in, add friends,,, search for availability of beers, view my profile including badges and beer lists, and toast and comment on my friends’ checkins.
Sometimes I seem to be able to do what I want no problem. When the app works it’s an incredible amount of fun. Other times I spend so much time goofing around with the app that my beer gets warm. At such times, I can’t help feeling that this is an app which has no excuse to be as non compliant as it is.
New interface brings huge accessibility improvements!
If you have been holding out on joining the beer social network because of accessibility, you will be pleased to see that untappd has a completely new front end. Features such as photos and ratings which were once off limits are now in play. Labeling of controls is tremendously improved. I haven't explored all the features yet, but I'm pretty confident that when I need a feature it will be there for me.
The new check in screen does seem to have some focus issues. I have to touch the section I want before swiping. Otherwise, swiping will give me mixed results, including information from the main screen. It takes me longer to check in now because of the focus issues and of course, the fact that I have access to more of the actual process, but overall, this new itteration is a substancial, long awaited, and very exciting improvement.
