Hello,
I am Deaf (since birth) and registered blind (since2011)
I am Iphone 4 user since it first comes out until few months ago, I accidentally upgrade iOS to 7 from 5. Now.. I now can't use the iPhone due to spidery thin texts. It is no good now. I regret for upgrading it.
I am looking for a phone that can go further than just texting.
This morning I was doing some shopping, I want to buy a tin of tuna.. Now.. I HATE tuna in brine.. I prefer tuna in sunflower oil. I was standing there in front of the row of tins trying to work out what the labels on the tins are saying. They all look the same ! The fonts on the labels are too small and too fade. I thought I wish I had a device that can read the tin and show more easier to read texts. I thought what about a smartphone can it do a job I was thinking? An apps?
If there is one.. tell me..
LG G3 a good phone for deaf and blind people?
Thanks

Hi John,

Hi John,
There are a number of things which might help you:
- For your basic phone functions, an Android device (such as the LG G3 which I don't have any particular knowledge of either way) using an alternative launcher such as Big Launcher: http://biglauncher.com/ will give you much bigger text and icons so you can use the sight you have. Big Launcher at least also works with Talkback / Brailleback for speech and tactile feedback.
- For reading tins in the supermarket, there are a couple of options:
1) a magnification app (there are many!) will either let you enlarge what you can see through the camera of the phone (handy as you can say turn a tin around to see it larger in real time), or take a photo and then enlarge it (handy for seeing say the price on the high shelf).
2) an app such as TapTapSee will let you take a photo of something which it will then send to its server and get an idenfification of what it is - http://www.taptapseeapp.com/
3) In some cases for the supermarket, a bar code reader app will perhaps do a better job of this (tap tap see is good, but may for instance simply say "Tin of tuna" which wouldn't have helped you here - I'm not 100% sure though ) as it will properly identify the product you are looking at, eg "John West 410g tuna in brine". There's a specifically accessible barcode reader app I can't put my finger on just at the minute - I'll update if I find it!
Finally an app such as Lend an eye: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.greycleints.lae&hl=en or "Be My Eyes" - http://www.bemyeyes.org/ - (currently only on iPhone but coming to Android soon hopefully), lets you connect with a sighted volunteer via video chat to help with things such as exactly your situation with identifying tuna tins in the supermarket.
Hope that helps get you started!
Regards
Quentin.
