Acapela is my preferred TTS engine

I really wanted to wait on reviewing acapela TTS, but decided to go ahead in the hopes that some one can help me fill in the gaps. The mere roomer that acapela would one day become available as a system wide tts engine for android was a deciding factor in my decision to make android work for me as a platform. I had it on windows mobile and loved it. Voices are purely a matter of personal preference. I like the inflection and pronounciation that acapela voices offer, and I have a few that I’ve purchased over the years for various needs and to add variety to my android experience. Acapela is neither the cheepest, nor the fastest speaking, nor the most stable, nor the best articulated synthesizer of the many options available on google play. What it is, aside from being my favourite to listen too, is consistent across the board, being far from the worst in any category either. With acapela, you get an enormous portfoleo of voices.While some of these are novelty, most are just plain useful voices. You have to buy each voice individually, but you can test each voice with your own words to see how it performs before you buy. You also get a text reader. To my knowledge, acapela’s is the most accessible of these. Talkback users may not have a great use for this, but it might be handy as a quick and dirty reading tool for the dislexic. Acapela is the ony synthesizer that I know of for sure which comes with a pronounciation editor. This is a very powerful feature that you can use to encourage acapela to pronounce proper names and other anomalous words properly. Adding a word to the pronounciation dictionary is fully accessible, but I have not figured out how to see the list of words, and there-by delete or edit one. This is a very important feature for me, as I frequently travel in unfamiliar areas with a GPS and I want to hear the street names properly. Acapela does a better than average job of pronouncing things to begin with, but the editor clenches it and sets this product apart from the rest. I started using acapela on my sony ericsson experia pro which was a gingerbread phone. On that platform, I didn’t have access to the settings button in the text to speech settings panel which would let me switch acapela voices. This improved when I switched to jellybean, and now kitkat, but may still be an issue for users of gingerbread. Acapela developers have been very involved in the eyes-free android discussion at various times, and have been very responsive to feedback from blind users. Despite the couple of accessibility issues mentioned above, I really find acapela tts to be a very polished product at this stage.
